{"id":1466,"date":"2026-03-03T15:07:46","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T15:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/?p=1466"},"modified":"2026-04-16T19:13:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T19:13:56","slug":"library-books-from-the-spanish-residential-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/library-books-from-the-spanish-residential-school\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Library books from the Spanish Residential School<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by Brenna Roblin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>During the recent processing of the Indigenous Language Collection (2015-0015), we came across several texts containing stamps from the libraries of the former school in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory and the Spanish Residential School, in Spanish, Ontario. The following examples offer a glimpse at the collection\u2019s materials and its connection to these schools.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wiikwemkoong Industrial School was founded by the Jesuits in 1878 and would operate on Manitoulin Island until 1913. In 1894, the Industrial School was integrated into the educational system managed by the Department of Indian Affairs. The school would be succeeded by St. Peter Claver School (1913-1946) and Garnier College (1946-1958), commonly referred to as the Spanish Residential Schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"714\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S2.2.17.1_01-714x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1465 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S2.2.17.1_01-714x1024.jpg 714w, https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S2.2.17.1_01-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S2.2.17.1_01-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S2.2.17.1_01-768x1102.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S2.2.17.1_01.jpg 906w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Many of the records in the Indigenous Language Collection are religious in nature, from hymns to books of prayers. Interestingly, several Anishinaabemowin hymnal booklets from the collection were printed locally in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory and stamped by the Industrial School library. Considering the original number of copies in the collection, these booklets may have been dispersed widely throughout the school community.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Ga Iji-Ganonindiwad Ningoting Bejig Eiad Anama-<\/em><br><em>kamig Gaie Bejib Ogidakamig<\/em> hymnals, [19-?].<br><em>2016<\/em>-0015.S2.2.17.1_01<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Niina Aiamie-Masinaigan <\/em>(1898) is the second printing of a book of prayers and hymns that features an Anishinaabemowin-French title page. During this period, most of the Jesuits posted at the school were francophones, many of whom learned to speak Anishinaabemowin and other Indigenous languages. With pencil and crayon, children appear to have inscribed their own names, birthdays, and other personal details. Many of the students who attended the Spanish Residential Schools came from local reserves, while some were from as far away as the communities of Ahkwes\u00e1hsne, Kahnaw\u00e0:ke, and Kanehsat\u00e0:ke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"grid-template-columns:65% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"847\" src=\"https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S1.2.3.2_45-46-1024x847.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1460 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S1.2.3.2_45-46-1024x847.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S1.2.3.2_45-46-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S1.2.3.2_45-46-150x124.jpg 150w, https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S1.2.3.2_45-46-768x635.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archivesjesuites.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2016-0015.S1.2.3.2_45-46.jpg 1300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Language learning resources, like the Anishinaabemowin dictionary by Father Martin F\u00e9rard, S.J., form a significant part of the collection. F\u00e9rard dedicated many years to composing the <em>Dictionnaire Fran\u00e7ais-Ojibwe<\/em>, completing it shortly before his death in 1891.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Manuscript of the dictionary by Martin F\u00e9rard, S.J., with defin-<br>itions in English, [18-]. 2016-0015.S1.2.3.2_45-46<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A bound manuscript of this text (pictured above) containing Spanish Residential School stamps is found in the collection alongside F\u00e9rard\u2019s notes and several transcriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 62%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Finally, a stamped copy of <em>Lexique de la langue algonquienne <\/em>can be found in the collection. Written by Sulpician priest J.A. Cuoq, this well-known lexicon of Algonquian languages was published in Montreal in 1886.
